Using Laser Therapy to Treat Acne

Laser therapy is now a common treatment for skin disorders such as very bad acne.  They are very safe and provide an effective and optimal treatment.  For many years, lasers were used for various medical and cosmetic treatments.  Lasers are strong beams of light directed to a specific area in the skin when applied as a tool for treatment of acne.  The light from the laser which converts to heat is absorbed by tissues while keeping the surrounding skin are unaffected. Thus the treatment is concentrated only on the affected areas.

Laser treatment should not be confused with light based therapy.  Light based therapy is used for rejuvenation providing younger looking skin.  The intensity of the light used is less compared to lasers.

Typically, most physicians advise against exposure to direct sunlight for about a month prior to receiving laser treatment.  During treatment, physicians and patients use protective eye wear as a safety precaution.  A laser hand piece will be used against the affected skin delivering the light beam.  Before each light pulse, a coolant may be applied to reduce any irritation on the skin.  Following treatment, there are several guidelines that must be followed depending on the type of laser treatment that was applied.  The manner and the materials used in washing will be provided by your physician to avoid undue injury to the affected skin.  The use of abrasive facial cleansers and heavy washing must be avoided during and after treatment.  Physicians would typically advise against direct exposure to the sun anywhere from four to six weeks after treatment.

Each laser treatment is unique to an individual case, therefore, each type of treatment and its corresponding precautions will be provided by your dermatologist. Something like acne on the forehead may be simple to treat. However, depending on the complexity of each case, laser treatment can last up to several weeks.  There are also several types of laser treatment, each providing its own effects.  Again, the type of laser treatment is provided on a case to case basis.

There are little known side effects to the use of laser treatment for acne.  Some patients will note a change in pigment color.  However, through time these changes in skin pigmentation will disappear and the skins normal color should return.

If you are considering laser treatment for skin disorders such as acne, then consult a dermatologist who is familiar with laser treatment.  A laser treatment program must be specific to your case due to the number of laser types and the amount of time required to improve your condition.
