Three anti aging skin care ingredients that work
Any woman who has spent time looking for anti aging skin care knows the problems – a huge number of products, too much excited hype and not enough straight forward, practical information about what will really deliver results.
In the end it really does come down to finding out what is in your face cream and whether the ingredients are likely to improve your wrinkles. Not so simple, as anyone who has tried to decipher the label on most skin care packaging knows.
What you have to identify are the key ingredients – what the makers call “actives” – the expensive highly effective parts of the formulation. Not surprisingly, the contents of the average anti aging moisturizer or serum will contain only a small percentage of “active” ingredients – they may be just too expensive or potentially harmful to use at high levels in the product.
The major part of any anti aging cream will be the ingredients that create the base cream itself – usually a mix of water, oil and other carriers that work together to form an emulsion. There will also be preservatives so the cream has a reasonable shelf life and fragrance to mask the smell of any active ingredients and make the cream more pleasant to use. All these things are found in most anti aging products.
So what makes your skin care effective in fighting wrinkles? The first thing is simply the moisture the cream delivers to your skin which plumps out your wrinkles and lines making your skin appear smoother. Moisturization also helps to protect your skin from further lines developing in the future. All creams that hydrate the skin over a long period (12-24 hours) will provide these benefits.
Additional anti aging effects beyond that depend on the type and level of the special active ingredients that your cream contains. Here it gets more difficult as there are relatively few active ingredients that have been tested and shown to be effective in reducing wrinkles and improving the appearance of photoaged skin. There are some that have got scientific data to back up their effectiveness and these three are among the best:
1. Retinol, retinyl palmitate – forms of topical vitamin A adapted for use in skin care formulations as they are less irritating than retinoic acid (tretinoin, Retin A). Retinol has to be present at sufficient levels (above 0.30%) to be effective so only buy products which clearly state the amount of retinol in the cream.
2. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) or glycolic acid – naturally ocurring acids which are used in skin peels at high concentrations and in skin care to fight the signs of aging. AHA has to be present in a formulation at a minimum of 8% to have any effect and most products will have much less than this.
3. Vitamin C – increases the formation of collagen and protects from free radical damage. The problems with vitamin C lie in stability. You have to find a serum or cream that has a proven method of stopping the vitamin C degrading before it can penetrate your skin and have any effect. High end dermatologist brands are best.
The presence of any of these three ingredients in your wrinkle cream are no guarantee that it will work. Online forums and review sites testify that a lot of anti aging skin care on the market simply does not work. But if the product you buy has been formulated properly and has the right amounts of active ingredients it is much more likely to deliver the younger looking skin you want.
