The Pillar Procedure for Treating Sleep Apnea
It was in October 2004 when the FDA finally approved the very first insertion procedure for Obstructive Sleep Apnea treatment which would come to be known as the Pillar Procedure.
How is it done? Well, the procedure is completed by inserting three 18mm woven polyester implants into your soft palate with the help of a delivery tool. Amazingly there are no incisions or stitches. The procedure stiffens the soft palate and at the same time adds support to it. Aside from the structural support it gives, it also decreases the vibration of tissue that causes snoring thus preventing airway blockage. The whole process just takes approximately 20 minutes and can be completed in just one sitting. Patients observed great improvements within weeks. The operation and recovery are fast and relatively pain-free. The implants and the natural fibrotic response in the body would add structural support and help stiffen the soft palate over time. The palate is removed after that since the palate of the patient gets adapted and the obstructive sleep apnea is treated. It takes three months, which is normal, to appreciate the full benefits of the Pillar Procedure.
There is relatively little to no discomfort since there is no removal of tissue during the procedure. Infections are also less likely to occur because the implants are sterile and all the tools used are sterilised. After the implants are placed, you may in fact not feel them after a few days.
Research shows that people who undergo pillar procedure experienced a major decrease in their snoring, experienced a decline of sleepiness during daytime, and noticed an important improvement in the quality of their lives. Bed partner satisfaction also increases up to 80% post treatment.
Given that CPAP therapy compliance can sometimes be a challenge for those who suffer from sleep apnea, it is extremely fortunate that there exists a variety of sleep apnea surgery options for this bothersome and potentially life threatening condition.
