The Difficult Decisions Related to Getting a Breast Implant Removal

There are many hard decisions that a woman faces when dealing with the question of breast implants. This has become a very controversial topic in recent years due to the possible side effects of the procedure. Even more confusing and difficult is the possible decision to reverse this process and have a breast implant removal. Financially and emotionally this can be a very difficult thing to do.

There are several reasons why somebody would want go through with the initial implant operation and then want to undo it. These reasons can range from simply having a change of heart and wanting go back to the way they originally looked, not liking the results, or trying to deal with the displeasure of those around them. There are medical reasons, too, why it might be necessary to remove the implants. Some implants can simply fail, even rupture. There are also cases where there is chronic pain after the initial procedure for a variety of reasons, or infection has set in. Sometimes the implant is placed and then the patient experiences abnormal MRI or mammogram results, possibly even breast cancer. All of these are potential reasons why somebody might want, or need, to have their implants taken out.

Depending upon what the reason was for removing them, the next decision is usually whether or not to replace the implants. Unfortunately, when they are initially removed, the breasts are not likely to return to the shape they had before the breast implant was placed. They are likely to look worse. When the implant surgery is first performed the breasts stretch very quickly to accommodate the new form and shape. The implants will put considerable pressure on the breast fat, which will basically melt away. This will result in a sagging, drooping look when the implants are taken away. The breasts will also probably appear small than they originally were.

For these reasons it is not usually recommended that the patient should have the implants taken out and not replace them with something else. If they are not to be replaced there is a good chance that additional cosmetic procedures will be needed to help re-sculpt the breast and return them to an approximation of their original appearance. It is vital for the patient and their doctor to have clear communication when dealing with these decisions. The understanding and expectations of the patient should be in line with the medical realities.

Nobody likes the idea of having to reverse an earlier medical procedure. Some reasons for wanting to do so are more legitimate than others, but the bottom line is the health and emotional well-being of the patient. These issues should be introduced and discussed before the initial breast augmentation is ever performed. With any cosmetic surgery procedure, a well informed patient is more likely to become a satisfied, happy patient in the end.
