Should you consider a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is when a replacement roots are placed in the jawbone of a patient and then new teeth are attached to these artificial roots. While the procedure can be costly and a little more invasive there are a number of reasons that you may consider it. Perhaps you just struggle with dentures. Some people never quit gagging from having dentures in their mouth, or others just dont like the extra maintenance they require. Perhaps you actually have some jaw damage and since they are going to have to do surgery on your jaw, some cosmetic dentistry bonding isnt that much in addition. Dont take a few blips from a website to rule out the use of a good dentistry tool.
There are a few risks that come with the surgery of implants. These are the normal risks associated with surgery of all kinds. Primarily, the danger of pain killers and anesthetics . Also, there is the risk of bacterial infection and possible bone loss if things go poorly. You should ask your doctor about the percent chance of any of these things happening when making your decision.
Cost is always a tricky factor to discuss because it is very unique to the individual. Sometimes the insurance company would rather pay for dentures than surgery, or vice versa. Perhaps you dont have any dental insurance at all, but a young surgeon in town looking for business. Youll just have to do your own due diligence when researching dental implants like when youre shopping for a car.
The last real consideration is the time of healing. The whole process can take up to 6 months to become fully healed with the first 4 to 6 weeks being quite disruptive. After the first few days the swelling heals, but after two weeks youll have to have sutures removed, and a few weeks after that youll be able to return to a more normal diet.
When considering a dental implant make sure you talk to more than one specialist about cost, recovery, pain, and alternative options.
