Permanent Dentures – 3 Very Important Considerations

When it comes to functionality and convenience, permanent dentures are more advantageous over removable dental bridges. These dental fixtures look and feel more natural so anyone having it wouldn’t really feel their teeth are false. But there are three very important things to consider before you decide to have permanently fixed false teeth.

Cost of Permanent Dentures

The process of permanently fixing dentures requires many trips to the dentist and this implies the process is quite expensive. Your present oral condition will be evaluated so that the denture expert can determine the number of teeth that needs replacement and select the proper kind of denture for you. Essentially, your gum tissues and gum ridge must be in good shape to support the dentures. Otherwise, you will have to undergo a surgical gum-shaping procedure, which means another fee to the doctor.

Surgical Risks

There are two procedures by which the denture is permanently fixed. One way is by permanently bonding part of denture’s side ridge to the adjacent real teeth which are not decaying. Usually the dentures are crowned to make the dental fixture more stable. The other one is called the dental implant procedure. This method is more stable than the first. Basically, the process will involve screwing a titanium framework directly to the gum’s bone tissues. After the gums have healed, the pre-formed dentures will be fixed to the metal frames. As with any surgical procedures, there will always be risks of complications and side effects with this procedure so you have to make sure your dentist are real experts with good professional reputation.

Future replacement

The permanent denture is not really permanent. The crowns and the dentures fixed to the metal frames will have to be replaced after 10-15 years. Unless you have the same dentist when that time comes, you have to make efforts in researching again another reputable dentist to maintain your dental implants.

If you are really serious about having a permanently fixed denture, you have to think seriously of these major considerations. Once successfully done, though, your permanent dentures will surely return the beauty of your smile.
