How Do You Care For Hair Plugs

Hair plugs is actually not the term generally used for this procedure any more but many people still use this term.  Most of the time you will hear reference to hair grafts, hair implants, or hair transplants.  These names all refer to the same process so we will just use hair plugs.  This hair restoration procedure was actually first utilized in Japan in the 1930’s to augment the eyebrows of females and to increase the facial hair of men.  Many surgeons were successful with these techniques but sadly most of their research was lost during World War Two.

The procedure, as it has been used in the US, involves removing living hairs with their follicles (roots) and other supporting structures from one area of the head and implanting them into the balding spot.  Usually when a man loses his hair he does so at the area above the forehead, called a receding hair line, and on the crown or vertex of the head.  Very rarely will a man lose hair at the posterior section of the scalp.  This fact lends itself well to the hair plugs surgical procedure because this area of thick hair growth works well as a donor site for the transplanted hairs.  Originally a section of scalp from this area would be incised from the head and the individual hair follicles would be removed, cleaned, and prepared for implantation.  The surgeon would then insert each individual follicle and place it so as to match the growth direction of the surrounding hairs.

Today the actual removal of the scalp is not necessary as the hairs can be directly removed.  The rest of the procedure is basically the same.  The care of hair plugs is quite straight forward.  As you can imagine, it takes a few days for the follicles to attach themselves in their new home so it is not recommended to shampoo for at least three days.  Also, combing can easily pull them out so this should not be done for a week and even then it should be done very gingerly.

If you are looking for a way to get new hair in your balding spot look into hair plugs.
