Breast Augmentation Procedure Overview

Breast augmentation is one of the most requested cosmetic surgery procedures today. In 2008 alone, over 350,000 breast enhancement surgeries were performed. Thanks to improved technology and surgical techniques, along with societal acceptance, more people have better options when it comes to improving their looks safely and more effectively.

What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is also known as augmentation mammoplasty. It is a type of surgical procedure designed to enhance, improve or uplift the shape and size of the breasts. Through augmentation, breast size can be increased by at least a cup to several bra cups. Augmentation can also help correct different-sized breasts and make them appear more symmetrical or uplift sagging breasts that have lost their mass due to pregnancy, nursing or aging.

In some cases, though, many women undergo breast enhancement mainly for aesthetic reasons, to achieve a fuller look and enhance body contour. The procedure may also be performed on women who have undergone mastectomy due to breast cancer in order to rebuild their breasts.

Types of breast augmentation
A typical breast enhancement procedure involves implants that are inserted into the breast area. In general, there are two types of materials used for breast implants — saline and silicone. In the U.S., however, cosmetic surgeons often use saline implants enclosed in a shell made from silicone rubber. These implants vary in size and shape, so the desired results are easier to predict and achieve. For older patients, breast lift and augmentation surgery are often combined during a single visit.

What to expect
A thorough diagnosis will be performed by a cosmetic surgeon, during which the medical history of the patient will be reviewed. At this time, the patient may also discuss any issues and apprehensions they may have with their doctor so as to ensure complete and correct understanding of the surgery and its possible results.

The surgery will be performed with the patient under general anesthesia and could last from about an hour to two hours. Bandaging is worn for up to two days, after which a support bra will be required. Patients can normally begin to move about in just 24 hours after operation. Patients will be advised to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting and exercises for about 4 to 6 weeks after the surgery.

Is the procedure painful?
Some patients may feel discomfort after the procedure but this may be alleviated with the use of oral painkillers. Antibiotics may also be prescribed during the first few days in order to prevent infection. As a result of the surgery, some swelling and bruising may be experienced but these will disappear over time.

Risks and limitations
Like all types of surgeries, breast augmentation does carry certain risks for the patient. Since each patient is different, it is expected that reactions and recovery periods will also vary. When considering breast augmentation surgery, it is important for patients to be very cautious about their reasons and their choice of doctors. If done incorrectly, breast enhancement can lead to serious health issues and life-threatening conditions. Only an experienced board-certified and licensed cosmetic surgeon should perform the surgery in a licensed clinic or medical facility.

Cost of breast augmentation
Breast augmentation surgeries start at about $4,000 to as much as $6,000 for saline implants, while silicone implants may cost more.
