After Liposuction: What Are The Possible Risks?
Liposuction is a surgical operation in which excess fat is removed by using a suctioning tube inserted through an incision made on the skin. Generally speaking, it is a cosmetic procedure. Similar to all surgical procedures, it is susceptible to risks, dangers and complications. If proper expectations and preparations are made, things should go well.
Let us discuss the possible complications after liposuction. These complications are life-threatening and should be categorized as least likely to happen because if all usual standard precautions are undertaken by a responsible medical practitioner taking care of the patient preoperatively, then they should never happen. You should also keep in mind the things that you need to avoid after undergoing liposuction.
Possible life-threatening ramifications that may arise during or after liposuction are:
1.) Anaphylactic shock, which is an allergic reaction to the medications or anesthetics used during the surgery.
2.) Fat embolism: Can be the cause of pulmonary embolism. Occurs when fat particles that were not suctioned out find their way into a blood vessel and become a large floating mass in your bloodstream (referred to as fat emboli), then this may reach the lungs causing pulmonary embolism which impairs breathing and can lead to premature death.
3.) Hemorrhage: During suctioning, the operating surgeon may accidentally injure an internal organ (ex: your intestine may be perforated by the suctioning cannula) and cause bleeding, which may be fatal.
4.) Fluid imbalance: Fat is mostly fluid and if it is suddenly suctioned out of your body, it may lead to a possible fluid imbalance. The surgeon can correct this by administering intravenous fluid replacement. If the doctor administers too much fluid, this may cause hypervolemia which leads to kidney and heart failure.
Don’t be too terrified regarding these possible complications. Like I said, these happen VERY rarely. As long as your surgeon, scrub nurse and anesthesiologist do their jobs responsibly, then you should be in safe hands. Remember, you will be required to do your part in choosing a credible team to handle your liposuction procedure. Do some research, check out the clinic’s reputation, perform comparisons and undergo proper preparations done before you decide which doctor you’d like to perform your cosmetic surgery.
